National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It is the time of year to recognize the devastation that interpersonal violence brings upon families and children in our community. Domestic Violence Awareness Month offers a unique opportunity to inform the community about the dynamics of domestic violence and the resources available to help keep the victim safe and secure. The Resource & Crisis Center is only one of many resources available to victims of domestic violence in Galveston County.

Domestic violence effects every one in the community. Both men and women can be victims or perpetrators. Interpersonal violence effects people of all ages, from childhood to the elderly (also known as elder abuse). Domestic violence knows no social or economic boundaries. Survivors are not the only victims of domestic violence – families, friends, and co-workers suffer from the presence of violence.

This month, stand together in solidarity with victims of domestic violence. There are many ways that you can become involved in raising awareness and supporting victims in our very own community. You can organize a drive to collect goods for the emergency shelter, invite an RCC speaker to your church, club, or workplace to learn more about domestic violence, share this website on Facebook, or sign-up to volunteer with RCC. And of course, join the Resource & Crisis Center as we support victims in our community at Yoga on the Beach on October 25th. Let’s make 2012 the year we stand together against domestic violence!
