The work of the Resource & Crisis Center requires dedicated people who are committed to seeing families rebuild their lives through healthy and stable relationships and community support. The Resource & Crisis Center is recruiting volunteers who are passionate about helping survivors of family violence and sexual assault recover from the trauma of victimization and eradicate interpersonal violence in the Galveston County community. If you share this passion for bettering the community, the Resource & Crisis Center invites you to explore our volunteer opportunities. RCC currently has great need for two volunteer positions:
- Medical Accompaniment Advocates: This volunteer opportunity is the most hands-on opportunity offered at RCC. Medical Accompaniment Advocates respond to calls from UTMB to assist sexual assault and family violence victims who are seeking immediate medical treatment after an assault. The advocate assists the victim through the forensic exam process by offering emotional support and educating the victim about crime victims’ rights. Volunteers in this capacity require a flexible schedule and receive extensive pre-service training. Medical Accompaniment Advocates forever make an impact by assisting victims through the immediate crisis after an assault.
- Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA): CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to make recommendations about what is in the best interest for children who are in foster care. Each CASA is assigned one child and is expected to spend time getting to know the child and keeping abreast of the child’s living situation on a monthly basis. CASA volunteers also provide a court report and appear in court during custody hearings. CASA volunteers receive 30-hours of initial training and make a minimum of a one year commitment to the program. Through this program, volunteers truly make a difference in the life of an abused child.
Other volunteer opportunities are available and are detailed here.
