Yaga’s Entertainment has generously invited the Resource & Crisis Center to participate in the Galveston Island Food & Wine Festival for the past three years. Each year, Yaga’s Entertainment has generously donated a portion of the proceeds from the festival to RCC to assist victims of family violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Most importantly, the fun and excitement of the evening is not the true reason that we will be gathering for the Casino for a Cause event. All proceeds from the 4^th Annual Casino for a Cause will benefit men, women, and children in the Galveston County community that are seeking safety and healing from family violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. A victim who has received services from the Resource & Crisis Center best explains how the proceeds of Casino for a Cause make a true difference in the lives of families by telling her story:

“At the Resource and Crisis Center I was received with open arms and non-judgmental staff. I was constantly reminded that it was not my fault and that I had the right to live without fear and violence. I was provided with crisis counseling, safety planning and assistance with food and clothing. I also received assistance in obtaining a two year protective order against my abuser. I strongly feel that without the help of the Resource and Crisis Center, I could have lost my life or had my child taken from me, due to the violence in the home. I can now live at peace with my child and show him that violence is not the answer.”

Take Back the Night Walk

Monday, April 1st at 45th Street and Seawall from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Over 50% of all sexual assaults that occur in the United States are not reported. Take Back the Night is a movement to bring awareness and change to end sexual violence of all kinds. The Resource & Crisis Center invites all to join us as we light-up the night with glow sticks during a 5K walk along the seawall in support of survivors throughout our community.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month Proclamation

The national theme for 2013 Sexual Assault Awareness Month is “It’s Time to Talk About It.” In honor of this theme, please join the Resource & Crisis Center for a county wide proclamation declaring April Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month announced by the Galveston County District Attorney, Jack Roady.

Child Abuse Awareness “Chalk Walk”

Monday, April 8th at original Galveston County Courthouse at 722 Moody Avenue at 5:30 PM

RCC and the Court Appointed Special Advocates program invite the community to chalk the sidewalks outside of the Galveston County Courthouse with pictures and logos in support of child abuse prevention awareness. All children at the event will get to place a pinwheel in the ground in honor of a child in foster care.

Sexual Assault Awareness Poetry Slam

Saturday, April 27th at MOD Coffeehouse from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM

RCC invites everyone in the community to join us for an open-mic style poetry slam honoring victims of sexual assault.

Every Valentine’s Day Dr. Sanders, Dr. Ricano, and the women of Bay Colony Chiropractic generously donate their time and services to raise funds for the Resource & Crisis Center. These funds help the Resource & Crisis Center continue to offer needed services such as 24-hour emergency shelter to families fleeing abuse, advocacy and support for survivors, protective order assistance to men and women in fear for their famlies’ physical safety, and individual counseling.

This is not the first time Dr. Sanders and Dr. Ricano have provided their time and talent to benefit the community. Dr. Sanders recalls commemorating Valentine’s Day by making this generous donation to the Resource & Crisis Center through her practice for the past 18 years. In addition, Bay Colony Chiropractic conducts three other “Charity Days” throughout the year. Thank you very much to Bay Colony Chiropractic and all of the patients who contributed to this generous donation!

The production of the Vagina Monologues organized by the Gay/Straight Alliance of Galveston last Thursday evening was a huge success!

But don’t worry if you missed it, the group will be performing a second showing this Friday, February 15th at 8:00 PM at 3rd Coast Bar Downtown located at 2416 Post Office Street.

This showing is free of charge, but the performers will be accepting donations to benefit the Resource & Crisis Center.

Seating is limited and the show is expected to fill up quick. Please arrive early and come out to support the Resource & Crisis Center of Galveston County!

This year, the Verizon Foundation has become a first time supporter of the Resource & Crisis Center. The Foundation has agreed to fund an education project that will promote family violence and sexual assault education among medical and other professionals throughout the Galveston County community. Through this project, RCC and the Verizon Foundation will encourage victimized families to seek help from RCC and increase support for survivors of family violence and sexual assault in our community.
